Secondary Rhinoplasty

Secondary rhinoplasty is a nose surgical intervention it is performed to correct unwanted or defective results of previous surgery. Patients come to the consultation with serious aesthetic problems, and functional in addition to psychological disorders from mild to severe as a result of their low self esteem and dissatisfaction.

The seconday surgery of the nose or secondary Rhinoplasty is the procedure of Cosmetic Surgery even more sensitive than the primary surgery of the nose, since the surgeon must act on a region already treated with scars and that in which their experience and knowledge are fundemental.

Secondary rhinoplasty is indicated for those who present an aesthetic alteration or function as a result of previous surgery. The secondary surgery of the nose can be from a small touch up to a big functional reconstruction and of support.. The most common defects to correct are products of: : an excessive resection or asymmetric in the first surgery, or that the nose has been left crooked or with a hump, or by presenting scaring alterations in which many times ,in which often prevents proper breathing or for small details thus the patient is not satisfied.

What is a secondary rhinoplasty?

It Is a cosmetic surgery of the nose, which is performed after a previous surgery to correct undesired results caused by incorrect diagnosis, surgical technique or ineptitude care. It is a complicated surgery where the surgeon plays a leading role demonstrating his skill, surgical ability and scientific knowledge. Often the surgeon dossier shall change his surgical plan due to the state of the tissues in which he finds at the time of the surgery.
 
     

Who needs a secondary nose operation ?

Those persons who present an aesthetic alteration and / or functional after having done a primary surgery of the nose or a primary rhinoplasty . The problems that can present are a crooked nose, a flat point/tip of the nose very thin, a dropping-point, or very square, problems and deformities of the wings of the nose and may also be of support for altering the septum or turbinates, adopting a saddle nose or sunken. Here are some of the changes that occur as a result of misdiagnosis, the use of a bad surgical technique or poor lack of skill or expertise of the surgeon.

Recovery

The nose plugs are removed after 24 hours and should be removed at 48 and 72 hours in those cases where septoplasty is combined .. Immobilization is done with a small splint of aluminum, avoiding the use of plaster bandages, which considerably improves the appearance of patient after surgery, and is withdrawn after a week. Finally it is , immobilized for one further week but with paper tape on the nose . After 14 days after surgery, the patient presents and looks almost normal, with the brusing practically disapearing on the cheeks The definitive results can be seen between 6 months to 1 year after having secondary rhinoplasty performed as anatomical regions have been worked and affected and with the existing scar tissue.
 
 
 

Technique

In Secondary rhinoplasty technique it is attempted to perform the closed technique but in 99% of cases you should use the open technique. Open techniques are necessary to correct important deformities , and where the surgeon can view the fibrosis caused by previous surgery The field of vision they provide is much better and necessary given the complexity of the surgery. this technique leaves a small scar on the nasal columella, almost imperceptibly over time.

What risk is there?

Secondary rhinoplasty complications are rare, but cases can occur epítasis infection or major (bleeding). Sometimes breathing difficulties or irregularities produced by a poor healing. The risks are those of an intervention that is performed under general anesthesia. 

Advice

It is useful to control inflammation using and cold packs avoid blowing your nose for 48 hours, and sleeping with the head slightly elevated. The patient should avoid the support of the glasses on the nasal dorsum during the first month. Do not smoke, or do abrupt exercises. You should strictly follow the surgeons instructions.
