If we said: imagine a negative character\u2014the classic villain from a story or movie\u2014how would you draw them? Chances are your villain would have small, beady eyes and thin lips.
\n<\/p>\n

But if we asked you to create a sensual character, whether male or female, you\u2019d almost certainly give them large eyes and full lips.<\/p>\n

Did we guess right? Most likely yes, because the image of a sexy man or woman with thick lips is a well-established clich\u00e9. And because it\u2019s so ingrained, many people\u2014wanting to enhance their appearance\u2014request a procedure to increase their lip volume<\/strong>, technically known as a “primary cheiloplasty<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Indeed, primary cheiloplasty aims to give or restore symmetry, volume, beauty, and harmony to the lips. It is generally considered a minor surgery, but it demands high precision and surgical skill: it affects a highly visible area of the face, and the results must be optimal.<\/p>\n

As you may know, lip augmentation cheiloplasties<\/a> often use implants, and after listening to the patient\u2019s needs and expectations, the surgeon will decide which material to use from the wide variety available on the market.<\/p>\n

Because this procedure affects such a visible part of our anatomy\u2014the lips\u2014primary cheiloplasty leaves little room for error. However, as we\u2019ve seen time and again in the media, sometimes cheiloplasty produces unsatisfactory results.<\/p>\n

An unwanted outcome can be the formation of a granuloma: the patient\u2019s immune system identifies the implanted material as a \u201cforeign body\u201d and responds by creating a scar capsule around it, which increases over time. This can be unsightly and even painful.<\/p>\n

Additionally, we\u2019ve seen patients who have had permanent filler injections that led to deformities.<\/p>\n

It can also happen that a patient, upon seeing the results\u2014medically and aesthetically acceptable\u2014feels the lip volume is too much and wants part of the material removed.<\/p>\n

In such cases, we can perform a secondary lip surgery, or secondary cheiloplasty<\/strong>, aimed at correcting abnormalities caused by the improper use of synthetic fillers\u2014often silicone.<\/p>\n
