And amid so many leisure travel offers, calls sometimes slip in for what we have come to call «medical tourism», that is, the possibility of travelling to certain countries where some treatments are better or cheaper.

What are we referring to?

Within this subsector, scalpel tourism, that is, the kind that lets you travel to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure, holds a prominent place. And, if you will allow us, a controversial and even dangerous one.

Surely someone, on reading what we have just written, is thinking: «Here they go, defending their turf». And of course we are, among other things, because ours is a turf earned through years of study and specialization, of professionalism and responsibility.

Please, don’t misunderstand us, we are not dismissing at a stroke everyone who practises outside our borders. What we find questionable and risky is trying to settle everything related to a surgical procedure, whatever its scope, in a quick round trip.

Even accepting that the doctor, their team and the healthcare setting in which they work are adequate, how can one believe that a prior consultation, a procedure and a (few) days of postoperative follow-up can replace an established relationship, appropriate preoperative tests:
