We are talking about the use of silicone oil<\/strong>, also known as biopolymers,<\/strong>\u00a0the filler that has been used most in the history of aesthetic medicine on the face, lips, cheeks, buttocks and breasts. With terrible results.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although it is not common to talk about this topic in our country, in other parts of the world the issue remained in the headlines for months, even years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That was the case until professionals and health authorities realized its high toxicity and the risk it posed, and demanded that it be banned. In some regions of the world, such as Venezuela and other Latin American countries, citizens even organized themselves into NGOs that fought to have it withdrawn. Thus, on September 5, the Framework Law Regulating, Controlling and Overseeing the Use and Application of Filler Substances (Biopolymers) in Latin America and the Caribbean was approved in Havana (Cuba).<\/p>\n

“The purpose of this law is to protect the life and the physical and psychological integrity of people in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Francisco Garc\u00eda, president of the Health Committee of the Latin American Parliament. “With this law, education campaigns will be permanently prepared, with dissemination in the media, about the risk of cosmetic treatments and filler substances in schools, universities and public places. To protect people’s health”.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, then, things have changed. But the legal ban came too late for many people who are still facing the consequences of past mistakes, the most common being displacement of the filler<\/strong> due to gravity, inflammation and discoloration<\/strong> of the surrounding tissues, the formation of granulomas<\/strong> or infection of the recipient area<\/strong>. All of them are common complications, and all of them must be fought by removing the biopolymers in question.<\/p>\n
