Beyoncé’s buttock augmentation (and that of many others) has helped popularize gluteal augmentation. More and more people are turning to plastic surgeons to undergo this procedure. Although studies show that many do so by following beauty standards that may prove to be fleeting, the truth is that buttock augmentation isn’t just for those who are following the latest trend.
Why has Beyoncé’s buttock augmentation increased demand for gluteal surgery?
According to a recent report by the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE), buttock augmentation procedures have increased by around 20–30% in the last two years.
It’s a striking enhancement, which, according to the study by the society that represents those of us who practice this specialty, is driven by two main reasons: the social influence of Beyoncé’s buttock augmentation—along with other celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez—and the popularization of an aesthetic standard imported from Latin America, which favors larger buttocks than those typical in Europe.
From these two reasons, it follows that women are the main group requesting this type of surgery, although men also benefit from it.
However, these two motivations don’t hide the fact that long before these celebrities became global icons—and before the Latin look became mainstream—many women and quite a few men were already struggling with flat buttocks that didn’t respond even to physical exercise.
Faced with that challenge, the use of appropriate implants was—and still is—a valid option.
What should be considered when undergoing buttock augmentation?
But beyond that, this is essential:
- That the implant is placed in the correct location. The surgeon must access the area through an incision in the intergluteal fold (between the two buttocks), reach the gluteus maximus, and create a pocket beneath it. This is where the implant will be inserted. Poor placement can lead to a failed procedure and may require a secondary corrective surgery.
- That the implants used are appropriate. Silicone gel implants used for the breasts are not suitable in this case. Gluteal implants are specifically designed to be more resistant and cohesive, in order to enhance and increase the volume of the buttocks.
As for the shape, there are round and almond-shaped implants, and the choice between them will depend on each individual case.
