It’s a trend—perhaps not unstoppable, but certainly undesirable: people undergoing procedures that put their health at risk in order to resemble not just celebrities, but even imaginary characters. And in their delusion, they are aided by doctors who disgrace the medical profession and specialty.
Let us introduce you to Pixee Fox, who has spent $120,000 to resemble, in her own words, comic book and Disney movie characters—beings like Tinkerbell and Jessica Rabbit, creations of illustrators’ imagination, “all curves and tiny waists.”
The list of procedures is long: rhinoplasty, four breast augmentations, fat grafting in various parts of her body… But the most alarming of all is that, to achieve her goal of having a wasp waist, Pixee wanted to have six ribs removed. And despite being told no by many surgeons, she persisted until she found one who agreed to do it.
The irresponsibility of certain professionals is only matched by Fox’s obsession—an obsession similar to others we’ve already talked about on this blog, and to many who haven’t yet appeared here (such as the man who spent a fortune to look like Madonna). A pursuit that can ruin them—physically, emotionally, and not just financially.
What’s more, there are already cases of people who, after undergoing countless procedures to look exactly like their favorite celebrity, decide that wasn’t the right path—or even the right celebrity. Such is the case of Sam Barton, who did everything he could to resemble British actor Joey Essex and is now asking the National Health Service (NHS) for help to undo what’s been done.
Because it’s crucial that we all understand this: plastic surgery exists to help. It can produce physical changes that may positively affect self-esteem, but it is not a magic solution.
We’ll say it using the words of the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE): “there are certain situations in which alternatives should be considered before undergoing a cosmetic procedure: patients with unrealistic expectations, patients in crisis, patients who are impossible to satisfy, patients obsessed with minimal flaws, and patients with mental illness.”
