The displacement of the breast implant or displacement of breast implant can occur just after its placement or even months after the surgery. What happens is that the implant itself rotates or slides from its original position, resulting in discomfort and a distorted and not very harmonious appearance of the breast.

Why does the displacement of breast implant occur?

The reasons for the displacement, rotation, or migration, are several and different, such as the weight of the implants themselves, which with the effect of gravity move downwards, a capsular contracture, surgical errors during the operation, or carelessness in the recovery process. The main cause is a widening of the pocket or hollow that the surgeon has created to place the implant. Said widening leaves space for the implant to move.

To correct the problem, the pocket must be narrowed, placing the implant again in an appropriate position, and without space for it to move again.

It can also happen that the implant has not adhered correctly to the tissue that surrounds it. In any case, the incidence of this implant displacement problem is very low, especially if a pocket is created with the exact dimensions of the implant, and the implant has a rough covering that allows it to adhere correctly.

Where does the breast implant move to?

A lateral displacement towards the armpits, downwards or upwards can occur, or they can move towards each other, a fact that we call “symmastia”. The nipple will always point towards the opposite side to which the implant has moved.

How is the displacement of breast implant corrected?

In the appointments prior to the operation, the surgeon will explain in detail the process and the expected final result, assessing the specific needs of each case. For this it will be necessary to assess the causes of the displacement of breast implant, and how to correct the deformity.

The technique to be used will depend on each case, always aimed at correcting the shape of the pocket that houses the implant. In the case of symmastia or joined implants, in which the loss of the intermammary groove occurs, the procedure varies.

The surgery presents the same risks as any breast augmentation surgery, and the recovery is also very similar.

Does the type of implant matter?

Yes, there are different types of implants. These can be anatomical or round. The advantage of the round ones in the face of the displacement problem is that even if they turn, they do not change the appearance of the breast. Another great alternative is the new implant from the Motiva brand.
