The proof? Secondary otoplasty is becoming increasingly common, both when it affects both ears (Bilateral Secondary Otoplasty) and when it is performed on only one (Unilateral Secondary Otoplasty). We very frequently receive patients who come to us because they have already had surgery at other centers and are not happy; they want to further improve the aesthetics. And they do well to come.

However, it is important that those who come to the consultation (or those who, like you, are informed beforehand by reading this post) receive (or read) all the necessary information, and it is also essential that they take into account some elementary rules of prudence. Let’s get to it:

– One cannot be operated on twice in quick succession; 3 to 6 months must pass between one intervention and another.

– It is important to keep in mind that secondary otoplasty is more laborious and complex than primary otoplasty, and it is logical that this is the case since the tissues are modified by the previous otoplasty.

– Good news: we perform secondary otoplasty with local anesthesia, and the patient does not have to be admitted.

– After a secondary otoplasty, the ears usually become inflamed, as happened in the first one, but a little more so. Small hematomas may also appear. Day by day, the swelling subsides, and after a week, the ears have an almost normal appearance.

– To ensure a successful postoperative period, the patient should use elastic bands or tennis headbands, even while sleeping, to keep the ears covered and protected in order to prevent the ears from becoming excessively inflamed.

– In addition, it is essential to follow the surgeon’s instructions and avoid excessive exertion and physical exercise.

In short: it is best if everything goes perfectly (ear-wise) the first time, but if that does not happen, we can enjoy a second chance. However, to take advantage of it, it is as important that the surgeon is an accredited professional as it is that the patient follows their instructions to the letter.
