The breasts are supported by skin and ligaments, which, due to the passage of time, weight fluctuations, or as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding, gradually lose firmness, resulting in sagging breasts.

Also known as breast ptosis, it can only be reversed through surgery (mastopexy) if firmness is to be restored.

Mastopexy is also indicated in cases of severe asymmetry, malformations, or breast reconstruction.

Breast Lift Treatment

The treatment varies depending on the condition of the breasts. In the initial stage, it’s common to notice volume loss in the upper part of the breast, although the lower pole also begins to sag, especially if the breast is large. Along with the breast, the areola also drops. Both breast weight and skin type determine the degree of sagging.

Depending on the case, the following procedures may be performed:

  1. Mastopexy with implants
  2. Mastopexy without implants

The position of the areola is what determines whether a lift (mastopexy) is necessary, and the surgeon will recommend the best approach based on the degree of ptosis.

In mastopexy, it’s not advisable to insert an implant that is too large, as this increases the risk of future sagging.

Scars

Scarring will depend on the individual case and the amount of skin that needs to be removed. The possible types include:

  • Inverted T: (anchor-shaped): Used when there is a significant excess of skin.
  • Periareolar: For less skin excess, a scar around the areola may suffice.

In some cases, a small vertical scar may be added to the periareolar incision to improve the final result.

In any case, a well-performed scar will be discreet, and the patient should always follow their surgeon’s advice, as the chosen technique depends on the specific needs of each case.
