The cosmetic procedure known as “Smile Lipt”—a combination of the English words “Lip” and “Lift”—involves cutting the muscles responsible for the movement of the corners of the mouth to create the illusion that the person is smiling all the time.

A plastic surgery clinic in South Korea performs the procedure, which weakens the muscle that controls tension at the corners of the mouth, forming a constant smile—just as experienced by Min-A-Shin and Soo-hyun Kim, two of the most popular South Korean entertainment celebrities, who now display a permanent smile.

Japanese media outlets have commented on this facial surgery performed by their uncomfortable neighbors, drawing comparisons to the permanent smile of Batman’s villain “The Joker,” and likening it to the appearance of Tomomi Itano (a member of AKB48) and other Japanese entertainers such as Hiroki Narimiya—suggesting they may have undergone a similar procedure.

South Korea has the highest number of foreign visitors seeking cosmetic surgery and is well known for it. However, it has also faced controversy, particularly during the beauty pageant held last April, when the striking similarity among contestants’ faces sparked debate and cast doubt on the natural beauty of the participants.
