Biopolymers refer to silicone oil or liquid silicone. These materials have been widely used as fillers, and their side effects lead to extremely serious consequences for the patient’s health. For this reason, their injection is currently prohibited. Patients who, due to poor advice, have opted for silicone injections should consult a professional who can remove them through secondary surgery.

What are biopolymers and why are they dangerous to health

Since their invention in the last century, biopolymer injections have been the most widely used filler in the history of cosmetic surgery. They have been used for breast, buttock, lip, and cheek augmentation. After their high toxicity and effects on the human body were confirmed, these materials were banned.

However, due to poor medical practice, body injections with biopolymers remain common in certain countries, especially in Latin America, as a (cheaper) alternative to implants. Despite the fact that their injection is officially prohibited, there are still clinics offering these materials to patients, committing a very serious case of medical negligence.

Are biopolymer fillers bad? What are the consequences of biopolymers?

This is because silicone can freely spread to other parts of the body and other tissues since it encounters no barrier (as is the case with implants, where the silicone is contained within a kind of pouch). In Spain, their injection is prohibited, and secondary surgeries to remove them are common.

The consequences of these injections appear over time, and different conditions have been observed:

  • On the one hand, due to gravity, the injected material may shift from its original location.
  • In addition, granulomas, inflammation, and infections in surrounding areas are common.
  • In the most severe cases, these injections have caused paralysis or even the patient’s death.

For this reason, if any of these abnormalities are detected, it is very important to remove biopolymers from the body by extracting them. The ideal method for their removal is secondary surgery, as the effectiveness of other methods has not been proven.

Because this is a complex procedure, the removal must be performed by an expert doctor with experience in this type of secondary surgery. Through this procedure, the goal is to remove as much of these materials as possible without sacrificing the surrounding tissues that may have been infiltrated.
