A quick read of the press in these times of cutbacks allows us to note a curious fact: the term “liposuction“, which strictly speaking refers to the technique of localised removal of subcutaneous fat by means of a cannula connected to a suction device, has been transferred, and successfully so, to reports that talk about all the superfluous things that need to be eliminated in public administrations.

It makes sense, and it bears witness to the enormous popularity of this surgical technique that so many turn to in order to improve their appearance and their self-esteem.

This is not the first time we have brought liposuction to this blog, and it will surely not be the last. Today, we want to focus on a very particular aspect: the results.

Specifically, because we are asked about it with increasing frequency, we want to talk about when the definitive results can be seen, and about the possible imperfections in those results.

Step by step

The results begin to be noticed between the third and sixth weeks, depending on the area treated; for example, in the waist it will be seen in three weeks and in the abdomen in a month and a half.

But the definitive results take somewhat longer, they are seen about 6 months after the procedure, and we can say that they are generally excellent, provided that the indication and the technique have been correct. In other words, six months after going through the operating theatre, the patient will appreciate the magnitude of the change and will confirm that the liposuction has definitively eliminated the localised fat deposits and that an appreciable retraction of the skin takes place.

Which does not prevent us from acknowledging that, on occasion, certain imperfections may occur (please, do not confuse these with complications). We are referring to those cases in which the correction carried out is not sufficient, to when small irregularities appear on the surface, or when the final result suffers from a certain asymmetry.

How are the imperfections caused by liposuction corrected?

Those imperfections can as a rule be corrected by means of a complementary treatment, generally a minimal “touch-up” that can often be carried out under local anaesthesia.

Finally, we want to insist on something that seems essential to us in order to avoid confusion, because only by knowing what we are talking about and what we can expect will we be in a position to face the procedure: liposuction is not a surgical technique for losing weight, but for harmonising the body contour.

Let this be said with the sole desire of avoiding misunderstandings and frustrations.
