There are “receding” chins, and we tend to attribute equally elusive characters to those who have them, perhaps because we are used to associating square jaws with a determined character. There are chins that look uncomfortable on certain faces, because they do not quite fit with the nose, which, far from being a trifle, is a constant source of frustration.
But cosmetic surgery has the solution: it is called augmentation mentoplasty and it is a procedure with which we carry out the aesthetic correction of the deformity caused by an underdeveloped chin, bringing it forward slightly so that the facial features are more proportionate.
Mentoplasty: procedure
The usual procedure when we operate on a chin that needs to be corrected by a few centimetres involves using an implant that allows us to obtain the correct anatomical shape. Implants are not enough in particularly severe cases, which require surgical procedures involving sections of the bone or vertical advancement osteotomies, a cosmetic surgery that offers excellent results, since it restores the harmony of the facial profile.
But let us return for the moment to the mentoplasties that we could call “minor”, inasmuch as they do not require drastic procedures.
The operation, which we perform under local anaesthesia, consists of placing a solid silicone implant, an inert and biocompatible material that does not cause rejection, in a pocket that we have previously created in front of the chin. The unavoidable incision can be made intraorally, in the groove between the gum and the lower lip, or below the chin (external approach).
And that is it: in barely half an hour everything is over, and two days later the swelling and the discomfort will have disappeared.
Postoperative instructions
That said, a few minor precautions must be taken, such as:
- Applying ice to the area after the procedure
- Taking extra care with oral hygiene and using antiseptic mouthwashes, especially if the incision has been made inside the mouth
And the SECPRE reminds us, as we do in our consultations, that in this type of procedure massage is contraindicated in the immediate postoperative period, as it could cause the implanted material to move.
Last but not least: the implant is permanent, it never has to be replaced.
