It started very modestly for Cherilyn Sarkasian La Pier, who was born in the Californian town of El Centro. Her mother was a Cherokee Indian and had several husbands and lovers; her father was an Armenian truck driver. In 1964, Cher met the Italian-American singer Salvatore Sonny Bono and they married that same year.
Their first single together, Caesar & Cleo, was a flop. Under the name Sonny & Cher, with I Got You they achieved a worldwide hit in 1965. With other hits such as The Beat Goes On and Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), they quickly became icons of the flower-power movement in the US.
Something rather strange considering that they lived in a fairly conventional way, especially when their daughter Chastity was born, whose name means chastity. “We are so conventional it is sickening,” Cher said at the time. The one who is not at all conventional is Chastity: she has undergone a sex change and has since gone by the name Chaz.
After her separation from Sonny Bono in 1974, Cher began a successful solo career and even had her own television show. Musically, things did not go as well for her in the 80s, so she tried to make her way as an actress on Broadway. She was then offered a role in Silkwood, for which she received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. However, she won the coveted statuette for Moonstruck, in 1987. After a long break, she returned to the cameras in 2010 for Burlesque: “That was, after a long time, a film where I said to myself This is for you. I can sing, I can wear a garter belt and I play the matriarch of a burlesque club. It could not be better”.
Cher also had an unexpected comeback in her music career with her dance album Believe, in 1998, which she dedicated to her ex-husband Sonny Bono, who died in a skiing accident. “It is great that people dance to my music. Dancing keeps you young., she says. And she denies herself nothing for her looks: she once even had a rib removed to slim her waist. Cher has plans for after her death: for years she has owned a plot in the Parisian cemetery of Père Lachaise, next to music and literary legends Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. However, she still has a lot to do: “I am not ready to retire for now,” she says as she plans her next tour.
