Carrot is a herbaceous plant, technically called Daucus or wild carrot; it has compound leaves and yellow and white flowers. The edible part is the root, fleshy, cone-shaped, orange in color.
It has a high content of carotenes and provitamin A, which makes it a very beneficial food for our skin.
Carrot contains 20% waste, 1.5% proteins, 0.2% fat, 7.3% sugars and abundant vitamins. Type A predominates in the form of provitamins, as with spinach, and with almost twice the amount as parsley.
It also has minerals such as iron, potassium and calcium at very considerable levels and somewhat less phosphorus.
It has a high amount of water (almost 90%) and is low-calorie; it contributes only 40% of calories to the diet. It has antioxidant properties and is a great protector of the skin. A person’s body needs 2 milligrams of vitamin A daily and carrot contains between 4 and 10 mg per 100 grams.
During breastfeeding it helps the secretion of breast milk. It is also rich in fiber, so it is an excellent regulator of the intestinal tract; it also balances bile secretion and favors the increase of red blood cells.
It can be consumed throughout the year, since it is grown in all seasons.
Carrot protects the skin and helps tanning, due to its high amount of carotenes. These have dietary properties and keep the skin hydrated and the tan lasts longer. Eating carrots favors the formation of vitamin A. Beta-carotenes have an antioxidant effect since they neutralize free radicals and in summer this is very important since they are generated by excessive exposure to the sun’s rays.
There are cosmetics on the market, creams and tanning lotions that contain carrot extract, and continuous and prolonged use gives the skin a darker tone.
There are a great variety and types of carrots that have to do with quality, although for consumption, it is best to choose the smaller ones, they are more tender, and not peel them, wash them well, and only scrape the surface. They can be eaten cooked or raw, a healthy, rich and natural food, optimal for summer diets.
