Tendencias cirugía estética 2015

Last July, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) released its global statistics, revealing that in 2014, more than 20 million aesthetic procedures—both surgical and non-surgical—were performed worldwide.

The leading country, where the most procedures were performed, was the United States (4,064,571, accounting for 20% of the total), followed by:

  • Brazil (2.058.505, 10,2%).
  • Japan (1.260.351, 6,2%).
  • South Korea (980.313, 4,8%).
  • Mexico (706.072, 3,5%).
  • Germany (533.622, 2,6%).
  • France (416.148, 2,1%).
  • Colombia (357.115, 1,8%).

The majority of these procedures were performed on women (86.3% of the total).

According to ISAPS, the most common surgical procedures are: eyelid surgery (1,427,451), liposuction (1,372,901), and breast augmentation (1,348,197). As for non-surgical procedures, the top three are: botulinum toxin injections (4,830,911), hyaluronic acid fillers (2,690,633), and hair removal (1,277,581).

It may come as a surprise that Spain does not appear among the countries listed, especially considering that, according to some professionals, it ranks among the top five worldwide in aesthetic medicine and surgery. In terms of quality, there’s no doubt we’re at the top—but due to our demographic reality, we’re far from reaching the volume of surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures seen in other countries.

In any case, other aspects of the global statistics align quite well with the data collected here. For instance, the report “The Reality of Aesthetic Surgery in Spain 2014”, published by the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) as an update to a similar study from 2010, found that breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in Spain—surpassing liposuction. These are followed by blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), autologous fat fillers (fat taken from another part of the patient’s body), rhinoplasty (nose surgery), and combined procedures involving breast augmentation with lifting.

In short, both local and international studies reveal consistent patterns that help us understand what our patients expect from us. It’s in our hands to meet those expectations to their full satisfaction.
