If we said: imagine a negative character—the classic villain from a story or movie—how would you draw them? Chances are your villain would have small, beady eyes and thin lips.
But if we asked you to create a sensual character, whether male or female, you’d almost certainly give them large eyes and full lips.
Did we guess right? Most likely yes, because the image of a sexy man or woman with thick lips is a well-established cliché. And because it’s so ingrained, many people—wanting to enhance their appearance—request a procedure to increase their lip volume, technically known as a “primary cheiloplasty.”
Indeed, primary cheiloplasty aims to give or restore symmetry, volume, beauty, and harmony to the lips. It is generally considered a minor surgery, but it demands high precision and surgical skill: it affects a highly visible area of the face, and the results must be optimal.
As you may know, lip augmentation cheiloplasties often use implants, and after listening to the patient’s needs and expectations, the surgeon will decide which material to use from the wide variety available on the market.
Because this procedure affects such a visible part of our anatomy—the lips—primary cheiloplasty leaves little room for error. However, as we’ve seen time and again in the media, sometimes cheiloplasty produces unsatisfactory results.
An unwanted outcome can be the formation of a granuloma: the patient’s immune system identifies the implanted material as a “foreign body” and responds by creating a scar capsule around it, which increases over time. This can be unsightly and even painful.
Additionally, we’ve seen patients who have had permanent filler injections that led to deformities.
It can also happen that a patient, upon seeing the results—medically and aesthetically acceptable—feels the lip volume is too much and wants part of the material removed.
In such cases, we can perform a secondary lip surgery, or secondary cheiloplasty, aimed at correcting abnormalities caused by the improper use of synthetic fillers—often silicone.
It’s a procedure in which we specialize, and we understand how much is at stake for the patient: restoring their facial appearance and even preventing or eliminating complications.
