Today we echo the striking controversy generated by MyFreeImplants, a website that offers “a fun, safe and debt-free alternative to costly breast augmentation loans.”
Its promoters say they have created a community made up of three groups of people: ladies who can “get those curves you have always dreamed of with FREE breast augmentation”; donors (men, of course, initially complete strangers to the women), who help “the women of their dreams achieve the body of their dreams”; and surgeons, who can access “our vast network of potential clients, all looking for quality plastic surgeons.”
The mechanism? The woman who wants to undergo breast augmentation tells her story on the network, where she starts a crowdfunding process to raise the necessary amount. The slogan that presides over the exchange: “Invest in breasts.”
We insist: it sounds strange. So much so that some claim it is another twist on the concept of a dating website, something its founder, Jay Moore (who admits that the idea came to them at a bachelor party in Las Vegas), denies.
Some professionals have already reacted. In Great Britain, The Times reported the words of a spokesperson for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons: surgeons who knowingly accept payments from women who went through the site will be expelled from the medical association. In the opinion of that regulatory body, the site and the procedure are degrading and trivialize an important decision.
The association was compelled to speak out because, according to the website’s promoters, 545 British women are already users (70% more than last year) and 900 British men have activated their profiles.
Even accepting that the website is exactly what it claims to be and not something sinister, it is difficult to consider it normal for women who want to undergo a breast surgery to open an auction to raise the necessary amount with “donations” from sponsors who apparently are so generous as to ask for nothing in return.
And most importantly: an important decision must not be trivialized, and entering an operating room is one. Any procedure requires that we first take a medical history and carry out a preoperative study (tests, X-rays, electrocardiogram, photographs, etc.). Reducing everything to an online dating system seems too irresponsible, doesn’t it?
