The study was carried out in the USA and was led by Dr. George Cotsarelis, head of the dermatology department. It has been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine and has identified a molecule that inhibits hair growth, prostaglandin D2 (PGD2)
Baldness affects around 80% of white men, and testosterone (the male sex hormone) and genetic background determine the onset of this problem.
Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) was found at high levels in the study in bald areas, and not in areas with hair. Studies were also carried out on mice that were subjected to high doses of this protein, and they became completely bald.
The director of the research, Dr. Cotsarelis, added that “the next step would be to detect the compounds that affect this receptor and also to determine whether blocking the receptors could reverse baldness or only prevent it. A question that could take time to answer”.
Currently, treatments are carried out with drugs or with hair transplant surgery, since there are areas of the scalp that cannot be recovered.
