Dr. Fernández Blanco and Dr. Pablo Arias talk to us about one of the complications that breast implants can have. It is called rippling.
What is rippling in breast implants?
It is the wrinkling of the implants, which can show through the skin or, on occasion, even be palpable, caused by the implants.
What are the causes or reasons for this type of complication?
There are several causes that can lead to rippling:
- Very slim patients with very thin skin
- Low volume of the mammary gland
- Position in which the implant is placed: it is more common when it is placed in front of the muscle
- The type of implant used; the greater the cohesiveness, the better. In our country, silicone implants help us prevent rippling.
What can we do to avoid ripples in breast implants?
One of our recommendations is to use implants with a small or moderate volume. Large-volume implants always cause many more problems.
How do we fix it?
We can perform lipofilling, that is, a fat graft in the area to provide greater skin coverage and thus prevent the ripples from showing.
In short, our recommendation is to use moderate volumes, since each patient’s tissue and skin coverage cannot be avoided.
