As we have been discussing in these posts, far from being a phenomenon confined to the Western world, the boom in plastic surgery is happening all over the world. Also in regions and countries where we might think that, for historical, social and even political reasons, this type of procedure has no place.

One example: according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), in 2011 1,270,000 liposuctions and 3.18 million botox applications were performed in… the United Arab Emirates.

An article published in the Khaleej Times quoted a local doctor according to whom numerous rhinoplasties were performed at his clinic because “they all want small, upturned noses like Haifa Wehbe and Nancy Ajram”. Those two names may mean nothing to us, but in the region we are talking about the two women, both Lebanese, are hugely famous artists and, by all accounts, admired and envied.

Perhaps more striking is the third reference our colleague alluded to in the aforementioned article: Kim Kardashian, whose rear curves are the dream of many of his patients.

Kardashian is a reference for many women and the odd man; you may remember the case of a young man from Manchester (England) who decided to subject his face and body to a string of plastic procedures to look like his favourite star… with more than questionable results. Kim Kardashian belongs to a family, the Kardashian-Jenners, in which everyone has been under the knife, some from an early age: Kylie Jenner started with a cheiloplasty, that is, a procedure to increase the volume of the lips, at just 17 years old.

Some media talk about envy as a driver of change, insisting that Kim’s younger half-sisters want to look like her and follow in her footsteps in the operating room. But beyond the much-publicised rivalries, the truth is that all of them (Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie and Kendall) have chosen to put themselves in the hands of surgeons to be perfectly sculpted: they are what some already call beauty victims, in a clear allusion to another term that has already become fully part of our lives, that of fashion victim.

And it also seems clear that the desire to look like Kim has spread beyond the family circle, as shown by what we have been discussing.

The curious thing is that the imitated is an imitator. Kim has mentioned on several occasions that her source of inspiration is another woman with “show-stopping curves”, Jennifer Lopez.
