A few days ago, Juan Manuel de Prada, a writer of weight, treated us to an article titled Apología del gordo in which he attributed moral values to fatness:

“It is evident that all the bigwigs of the European Union, those tyrants disguised as efficient bureaucrats, are as thin as anchovies; and also that the most twisted writers, consumed by jealousy, take great care to watch their figure. We fat people, on the other hand, are blessed with the virtue of placidity; and we have a poise, a way of filling out a suit and sprawling on the sofa that conveys confidence, presence, calm and majesty.”

De Prada also extolled the amatory advantages of obesity:

“It has been proven that we fat men are the most devoted lovers, because our embrace is always more tender and passionate.”

And, in the end, he concluded:

“Every day I thank God for making me and keeping me fat and for allowing me to enjoy delights that are forbidden to thin people.”

As you can read, at least in this text, Juan Manuel de Prada ignores all the drawbacks that excess weight presents, as if extra kilos were an inexhaustible source of pleasures with no downside, with no bad side at all. Something that even the World Health Organization refutes.

We can agree with him that everyone is free to feel comfortable with their weight, and even admit that nowadays there is an obsession with thinness that is sometimes somewhat unhealthy.

But those of us who see people every day who weigh more than is appropriate and desired are fully aware of the physical and psychological problems this causes. And we wonder what is wrong with helping our patients overcome that situation.

Of course, liposuction is not a weight-loss method and its goal is not to control weight, but it can be of great help in combating excess volume.

Liposuction is used to eliminate fat; it guarantees the radical and permanent removal of localized fat deposits that do not disappear any other way, neither by following a diet nor by exercising. It can be performed on the flanks, hips, abdomen, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, arms and back, and even on the face and neck.

Experience tells us that those who turn to liposuction do not do so on a mere whim, but because they know their well-being depends on it. Because what for De Prada is “an act of distinction and aristocracy”, for others can be a source of dissatisfaction.
