Liquid silicone infiltrates tissues and produces granuloma

All you have to do is go to Google and type the words “biopolymers” + “risks”. The list of results is the clearest proof of the problems arising from an irresponsible practice that causes serious harm to people’s health.

Very often, this reckless behaviour comes to light because its victims are people of some fame, who have media platforms to air their problems.

Thus, following two cases recorded in Argentina, the country’s media echoed the warnings issued by the Sociedad de Cirugía Plástica de Buenos Aires (SCPBA): there are safe substances, compatible with the body that make it possible to achieve satisfactory results, but some doctors continue to use filler materials that are not approved by health authorities in order to make greater financial profits.

The reports talked about liquid silicone, the applications of collagen and methacrylate that “have been discontinued because they cause health problems”, and quoted the words of two professionals, who recalled:

– That “collagen stopped being used because it causes allergic reactions and, due to its large inflammatory component, it deforms the faces where it is injected”.

– That “the biopolymer known as liquid silicone is the product that was most used in the late ’80s, a permanent filler substance that cannot be removed from the body, and that causes serious health problems”.

We can only endorse their words. Biopolymers, although banned, continue to be used by those who put enrichment before professional decency, and accepted by people who do not mind taking risks in order to save some money… or who simply want to reshape their body to improve their life, and do not put themselves in the right hands.

At our clinics we all too often receive men and women who went into the operating room with complete peace of mind and came out with substances in their body whose negative effects are no trifling matter, because liquid silicone does not stay still, it infiltrates the surrounding tissues, it produces granulomas… It is up to us to extract those biopolymers while trying not to sacrifice the surrounding tissues, or to sacrifice as little as possible. In short, a secondary surgery that is tricky but essential to avoid greater harm.

Although the best way to avoid it, and we will never tire of repeating it, is to trust reliable professionals from the start, for whom the health of their patients is priceless.
