Brazilian surgeon Ivo Pitanguy, considered the father of modern cosmetic surgery, has highlighted the importance of doctors interacting with patients and seeking, when treating them, “the balance between their appearance and their mind”. Ivo Pitanguy (Belo Horizonte, 1926) made these statements in Cádiz last week, where he received the Cortes de Cádiz Ibero-American Surgery Award “Pedro Virgili” for his professional career. Dr. Pitanguy, who has operated on people from the world of film, rock and royalty, as well as anonymous and humble people, thus joins the list of Ibero-American talents who, in different fields, have been recognized by the Cortes de Cádiz Awards. The surgeon explained that he is especially “proud” to receive this award because “in this way the importance of surgery in the world is valued” and because he is glad that Cádiz “a city where freedom is always present, as it made clear with its Constitution of 1812, remembers him. Ivo Pitanguy highlighted “the interest that exists in plastic surgery, in which the important thing is often dealing with a person, which is very complex”. “In the past it was not very common for people with an aesthetic problem to go to hospitals, since appearance was not seen as being as important as it is now”, he stated. In addition, he expressed that what is often necessary is “to be at peace with your own image, both the inner and the outer one”. Dr. Pitanguy highlighted the “good level” that exists in Spain with regard to cosmetic surgery, and considered “ethics” to be “fundamental” in his profession. I will never forget Federico García Lorca’s poem ‘Antoñito El Camborio’ or those of Antonio Machado, they have all followed me for a long time. I also love Andalusia’s music, the bulls, the direct contact with the sea; it is a land with a personality very open to the world”.
