Gonion sounds like a distant planet, an asteroid about to enter the earth’s orbit. But, as far as we know, it is neither one nor the other: it is a very close point, located on the outer edge of the angle of the jaw.
What is the male gonion?
To express it in more professional terms, which we take from a medical dictionary: gonion is the craniometric point located at the lower vertex of the mandibular bone, at the meeting point of the posterior border and the lower border and the midline.
From this it follows that the configuration of this point will determine the shape of the jaw, whether it is more or less square. Something that many men long for when they have a sharp face, a long face, or perhaps a childlike one, and they want a change to approach the beauty canon by which we are guided, which seeks for men an almost right‑angled jaw, a symbol of virility and determination.
How can you achieve a good gonion angle?
Through a gonion prosthesis implant.
This is a very simple procedure. The patient is placed under general anesthesia, we insert a solid silicone prosthesis over the angles of the jaw. Subsequently, we fix the prostheses with titanium screws and close the incisions with absorbable stitches.
How long does gonion surgery last and what is the recovery like?
The intervention usually lasts an hour and a half, experience tells us that it is not painful; it usually causes inflammation (hence we always recommend the patient to apply cold to the area) but almost never causes bruising, the operated person recovers their normal appearance in just four days.
What care should be followed after a gonion prosthesis surgery?
It is advisable that during the first 48 hours you refrain from eating foods that need to be chewed, among other things, because at least on the first day you will have difficulty chewing.
In addition, we ask the patient to perform frequent mouthwashes with antiseptic mouthwashes.
The latter is important, because in this intervention, as in all intraoral ones, there is a certain risk of infection that will only be avoided by being scrupulous in cleaning the area.
And what if the result is not as expected?
Generally, the result is usually the desired one. And if that does not happen, or if the implanted gonion prosthesis does not satisfy the patient’s wishes, then we can easily remove it and, so to speak, go back to square one, recovering the initial appearance prior to the modification.
