Who hasn’t heard of King Midas, that poor wretch who turned everything he touched into gold? His was a curse, but his “heirs” do not seem unhappy about it.
Let us think about the Kardashian clan, that strange family that is usually in the news because of their cosmetic procedures. Not long ago we learned that Kim Kardashian, probably the best known of them all, had launched her own line of emojis, appropriately called Kimojis.
Among them, of course, her world-famous backside, which people will talk about for ages, in the same way we have long talked about Cleopatra’s famous nose or, more recently, Liz Taylor’s violet eyes.
What is relevant about the clan for the purposes of this blog is how important it has been for our specialty that the members of this family openly acknowledge how many and what type of procedures they have undergone. In fact, a British clinic that studied the phenomenon found that more and more people want to “imitate” some of their procedures, an increase that the study authors estimate at 73%, although there are astronomical peaks: for example, when last May Kylie Jenner admitted that she had undergone a lip augmentation, that is, she had her lips filled, the number of visits to the clinic website mentioned by the Daily Mail increased by 700%.
It is obvious that the Kardashians are not the first celebrities to go under the knife; what is new is that they talk about it completely naturally. And there are many surgeons who appreciate that behavior, which has helped normalize a practice that some people viewed with suspicion.
Nevertheless, it is advisable to be cautious. Because on these pages we have insisted on the need to approach cosmetic surgery with the right reasons and expectations, on the importance of never losing sight of the fact that we are talking about surgical procedures, on the critical importance of not trivializing them.
Therefore, the popularization of a medical specialty that can do so much good for people with aesthetic and more-than-aesthetic problems is welcome. But let us say it once again, and it will not be the last time: patient and doctor must act responsibly, each in their own role. For the good of plastic surgery, for the good of those who undergo it.
