Many patients come to our practice asking about the periareolar breast lift, since in theory it is the one that leaves the fewest scars on the skin. In this post we will clear up doubts on this topic and explain in which cases this type of mastopexy is advisable.

When can you have a periareolar mastopexy?

This technique has very specific and precise indications. It can only be performed in very specific cases and with small displacements. In other words, a periareolar breast lift can be performed when the breast has not dropped significantly and it is not necessary to remove mammary gland or a lot of tissue from the lower part of the breast. For example, this procedure is indicated for cases of tuberous breasts.

This type of procedure does not remove a large amount of skin, since its aim is to change the position of the areola, so if the breast is very droopy, the results will barely be visible and the patient will have to undergo a second surgery.

Periareolar mastopexy does not guarantee correct results or good coning of the breast. In addition, it places all the tension on the periareolar line, which over time generally results in stretched scars and causes a flat breast profile.

How is a periareolar breast lift performed?

Periareolar mastopexy is performed by removing the skin around the areola, and then repositioning it higher up in order to correct the sagging. The breast implant is inserted through the incision.

Alternatives to a periareolar mastopexy

Many surgeons believe it is better to lift the breast using vertical compensation or even horizontal compensation, the inverted T technique. Although it may seem off-putting at first, since it creates more scars, these are of better quality and give the breast a more correct shape, with or without implants.

Advantages and disadvantages of a periareolar breast lift

In summary, we explain the advantages of this type of technique and its disadvantages:

Advantages:

  1. The scar is concealed around the nipple.
  2. The size of the areola can be reduced.
  3. It only causes one scar, since the implant is inserted through it.

Disadvantages:

  1. It increases the size of the nipple: by removing the surrounding skin, the size of
    the areola usually increases.
  2. It tends to deform the areola: over time, the nipple tends to lose its shape due to gravitational forces that tend to stretch it vertically.
  3. It flattens the breast: by removing skin from the central area of
the breast, it tends to flatten.
