There’s news and then there’s news, and judging by the reaction on social media, this was big news: Leticia Sabater was a virgin again… at 48 years old. Indeed, the woman who was once one of Spain’s most popular TV presenters, long gone from the spotlight, felt it necessary to announce to the world that she had undergone surgery to reconstruct her hymen.
Although that had not actually been her first intention, as she explained, in January she traveled to Miami to have her vagina widened (“I’ve already had to end five relationships because it was impossible for us to have sex because of this little problem”) and found out about the other operation. “At 48 I have already decided that I’m not going to be a mother. Since I’m not going to have financial burdens of that kind, I told myself that the time had come to treat myself”. And she did. “I feel brand new”, she added.
Needless to say, within hours her revelation became a trending topic on Twitter, and she soon became the target of all kinds of jokes and jibes. But that is another story.
What strikes us here is that Leticia Sabater did not know about hymen reconstruction surgery, and even that she decided to undergo it on the spur of the moment to “treat herself”.
Hymenoplasty is a relatively common procedure, especially among women from Arab countries who, having had sexual relations before marriage, realize that if they were discovered by their relatives they could be repudiated or, worse, murdered. Hence more and more young women decide to undergo hymen reconstruction in order to hide any trace of sexual activity.
A few years ago, the Lebanon correspondent for the newspaper El Mundo, Mónica G. Prieto described this social reality in a report thanks to which we learned that hymenoplasty is an option only available to the most economically well-off women, while less affluent women resort to “homemade tricks ranging from potions made in pharmacies from synthetic whale fat, sulfuric acid and red dye that simulate the texture and color of blood, to small pieces of calf’s liver”.
In short, regardless of what each of us thinks about a society in which women are forced to resort to this technique not just to save their honor but even to save their lives, it is good to know that the operation can be performed with full guarantees. And that is what we wanted to tell you here.
