Canthopexy is a cosmetic surgery performed to strengthen the tissues at the outer corner of the eyelids and give the face and the eyes a more youthful and relaxed appearance.

Patients suitable for this surgery must have facial tissues and muscles in good condition, as well as enjoy good health. It is preferable that patients are non-smokers and have realistic goals and expectations about the treatment.

Canthopexy the surgical technique: The surgery is outpatient and sedation and local anaesthesia are used; the surgeon will place scissors at the outer junction of the eyelids (lower and upper) in order to make a fine cut in the lateral canthus, dissected towards the orbital bone rim. The lower half of the lateral canthal tendon, which extends from the orbital bone rim to the lower eyelid, is isolated and cut; this is done to release it from its attachment to the bone.

An incision will be made at one side of the eyelid near the cut tendon, in order to clean the tarsus of the tendon, clearing away the conjunctiva and the attached skin. In this way, a small structure will be created in order to form a new, tighter tendon. A non-absorbable suture will be used to stitch this structure to the periosteum.

Canthopexy or eyelid surgery is simple and quick in the hands of a skilled and experienced surgeon; the results are truly spectacular, as they renew , beautify and restore youth to the eyes.
